Search Engine Optimisation

Search engines are the lifeblood of any website. Locally, it’s easy to advertise your website by simply handing out cards with your URL printed on them. Unless you plan to print 7 billion cards and hand them out to every single human being on the planet, search engines are essential to the continued success of your website.  Search engine optimisation, known colloquially as SEO, is the tool you need to make sure you reach the highest point possible in relevant searches. What is SEO and how can it help you increase hits to your website?

What is SEO?

SEO is defined as the ‘process of maximising visitors to a particular website by ensuring the site appears high on the list of results returned by a search engine.”  In layman’s terms, by using specially placed keywords and original content, you can ensure a higher place on the search engine results page. Since most people, when they search for something on Google or Bing, rarely go any further than the first page, Search Engine Optimisation can, quite literally, make or break your website.

What determines your search engine rank?

Search engines like Google use ‘bots’ that visit websites periodically to search for a variety of criteria to base your search engine rank on. These include:

  • Keyword ratio: Keywords are essential to search engine ranks, but if your site is stuffed with keywords, it will lower your rank.  There is a very delicate keyword to content balance that must be adhered to.
  • Content: Your content needs to be as original as possible. It may seem impossible, with the enormous number of websites currently live on the web, to create original content, but let us assure you that it IS still possible. If your content shows up word for word on another site, whether it was stolen from you or what, it will damage your ranking.
  • Functionality: If part or all of your website site does not work, the Google bot will drop your rank accordingly. No one wants to visit a website that doesn’t work, and a broken site will lose you more hits than any other problem.

Who needs SEO?

This is a bit of a loaded question, but the short answer is: Everyone. Everyone who has a website and would like visitors to that website needs SEO.  It doesn’t matter if you’re writing a baking blog or selling automotive repairs, if you want users to be able to find your website then SEO is essential to your website’s success.
